The Detroit Red Wings have signed defenseman Max Nicastro to a NHL entry-level contract, the same team that selected him in the 2008 NHL Draft.
Nicastro spent two seasons in the USHL with the Chicago Steel (2007-09). As a rookie, he collected 20 points (6g, 14a) in 58 games with the Steel. He also added three points (1g, 2a) in seven playoff games. Following that season, he was selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the third round (91st overall) in the 2008 NHL Draft.
The defenseman returned for a second USHL season with the Steel and put up 31 points (9g, 22a) in 57 games, the second most points among defensemen on the team, finishing second to John Moore who was named USHL Defenseman of the Year and would go on to be a first-round NHL Draft choice. Nicastro was also selected to participate in the 2009 USHL All-Star Game.
Over the last three seasons, Nicastro has played collegiate hockey at Boston University where he compiled 33 points (11g, 22a) in 102 games at the school. The 22-year-old is a native of Thousand Oaks, California.
