USHL Has Record-Setting NHL Draft
Sunday June 30, 2013
Michael Downing, Jake Guentzel, and Eamon McAdam were among a record 32 USHL players selected in the 2013 NHL Draft on Sunday, June 30th.
32 players from the 2012-13 season drafted by NHL teams, plus 9 alumni chosen
It was a historic day for the USHL once the seven rounds of the 2013 NHL Draft had concluded as 32 players who suited up during the 2012-13 USHL season were chosen by NHL teams. The 32 total players establish a new League record, surpassing the previous USHL high of 28 which had been achieved in each of the past two NHL drafts.
Additionally, nine alumni of the League were drafted to bring the total to 41 players with USHL credentials who heard their names called by NHL teams. The first alum chosen was defenseman Seth Jones (Team USA, 2010-12) who went fourth overall to the Nashville Predators.
The first USHL player from the 2012-13 season was forward Michael McCarron of Team USA who was chosen 25th overall by the Montreal Canadiens. His selection marked the ninth consecutive season that at least one USHL player was selected in the first round of the NHL Draft.
The second round of the Draft began a run of USHL selections as Waterloo Black Hawks defenseman Ian McCoshen was chosen by the Florida Panthers with the 31st overall pick. It was the seventh consecutive year that the Panthers chose at least one USHL player. Five of the next 16 picks would come from the USHL, including two players to the Buffalo Sabres as they chose Team USA forward J.T. Compher 35th and Muskegon Lumberjacks forward Connor Hurley at 38th.
Three more USHL defensemen were chosen in the second round, starting with Steven Santini of Team USA (42nd overall to New Jersey Devils) and then Gustav Olofsson (46th to Minnesota Wild) of the Green Bay Gamblers and Tommy Vannelli (47th to St. Louis Blues) of Team USA were taken with back-to-back picks.
The New York Islanders used a pair of selections in the third round to choose Waterloo Black Hawks teammates, first with goaltender Eamon McAdam (70th overall) before taking USHL Player of the Year Taylor Cammarata (76th overall) just five picks later. Right after Cammarata, the 2011-12 USHL Rookie of the Year, had his name posted on the NHL Draft board, this season’s Rookie of the Year was selected as Jake Guentzel of the Sioux City Musketeers went to the Pittsburgh Penguins (77th overall).
Defenseman Michael Downing of the Dubuque Fighting Saints was picked by the Florida Panthers in the fourth round (97th overall) which made it nine consecutive seasons that the Clark Cup championship team would have at least one player chosen in the NHL Draft.
The fifth round saw 10 USHL players picked, including a pair of Omaha Lancers – Tucker Poolman (127th to Winnipeg Jets) and Grant Besse (147th to Anaheim Ducks) – which now gives the team nine consecutive years with at least one player chosen, the longest active streak among USHL teams. It was also a family affair in the fifth round as Muskegon Lumberjacks defenseman Michael Brodzinski was picked 141st overall by the San Jose Sharks before his older brother and Fargo Force alum Jonny Brodzinski (2010-12) was taken seven picks later to the Los Angeles Kings.
Ten different USHL Member Clubs had players selected in the 2013 NHL Draft while five had alumni chosen. In all, 19 of the 30 NHL organizations chose a USHL player.
